A little motivation, a few tips, and a reflection on my MS1 year...

Hello, friends!! I am 3 days and 2 exams away from finishing my first year of medical school. What a ride it has been!

I just did a podcast interview with Dr Ryan Gray over at medicalschoolhq.net where we talk about having a “why,” staying motivated, and making it work during the premed journey. Since OPM was (and is) such a huge part of my support, this forum was discussed quite a bit!

I just wanted to pass this along if you need a little motivation…I have always been so inspired and encouraged by your stories, so here is mine. Whether you decide to jump in with both feet or you realize it’s just not for you, never let fear make your choices for you.

Carrie,

I am so proud of you! Keep up the good work. I can’t wait to see where you land in this whole process.

I hope to see you sometime soon …

Let me echo Lorien. Congratulations on this point in your journey. After 4 years of medical school, I think that the first year was the hardest. (except the second year – that was the hardest too

You’ve done great! Hope you can take a little time to destress this summer!

Congrats Carrie. Just caught your podcast. SO INSPIRATIONAL!!! Thanks. I need that, as I have very few supporters on this journey. Funny, we have a lot in common…military spouses/families, home in Nashville (tho I now live in FL), close in age, professional career in medical field. I have 2 specific questions for you and others:

  1. How did you prepared for MCAT while working and being a wife/parent? I’ve taken the exam before and all the schools say the same thing, I just need to raise my MCAT score. I have books from test preps, plus some that friends gave me but I think my strategy is off.

  2. When did you actually apply and submit your scores? Its important to make sure I go in with a strong MCAT, but also apply within a reasonable time in the cycle. I’m scheduled for July 12th test and plan to re-submit my apps around the same time. Any thoughts??

Thanks for you help! Post or PM me directly. Would love to get your perspective. Congrats again, and enjoy your summer!

One last question:

How did you get the courage to leave your career in health administration? Did you juggle school and work, or did you leave/step down while going back to school. I’m finding it extremely difficult to juggle the 2 and now that I have to retake MCAT I wonder if I need to do some shifting.
