Hi I am a 33 year old female. I am currently an LPN getting ready to bridge into the RN program (will take 14 months). After obtaining the associate in RN I plan to finish the required courses for medical school. I have some concerns about my grades thus far. The science courses have not been easy for me, particularly chemistry. I still have to complete organic chemistry, physics and possibly calculus. I worry about not being able to do well on the mcat (particulary in the chemistry area). Working full time has played a large part in me not being able to perform more adequately acadmically. In the near future I do plan to adjust my work schedule, by the time I start taking the additional science courses I will be in a much better financial situation to work less if at all. With these grades so far what are my chances?
Biology B after I repeated with an F
A/P 1 A
A/P 2 A
Chem 1 B
Chem 2 B
Organic chemistry F
Both of the grades of F were a result of stopping the class after the drop date. Responses will be greatly appreciated.
Uh. I would ask, beg, beg again, petition, climb ladders… to get that “F” off your transcript and changed to a “W”…
A/P is nice but not a required. The "B"s won’t kill you but you’d probably want to have all "A"s from here on out.
But that “F” … killer. Even with a retake and an “A” it will be averaged by AMCAS to a “C”…
Also, bear in mind the grade replacement policy of AACOMAS (application for DO school). That will help your GPA, but you will still want to have a compelling reason for those F’s in your narrative.
Medical school will only be harder. I would suggest not working during your retake, and utilizing all available resources during Organic Chemistry (Teaching assistant or professor office hours, “Organic chemistry as a second language” book to supplement your studies, copying the reaction mechanisms repetitively. If you can do very well (A) then, great. If you are not able to do well in ideal conditions, that may be an indication for your to reconsider.
Most medical schools require a bachelor’s degree so that should also be part of your planning.
Best of luck as you pursue this!
