??do pre-requsites expire??

Hi everyone!

I am currently calling schools to obtain school specific information but

  1. did anyone encounter pre-requisite “expiration dates”?

Ex. courses must be completed 10 years from matriculation to medical school.

    I took my pre-reqs in 2009-2013 and I am applying in 2017.

[My oldest pre-reqs are Biology I and II, Gen Chem I and II -> 8 years from MD application, 9 years from matriculation.]

    What has been your experience?

  2. If you applied a few years after finishing your pre-reqs, did an interviewer question your ability to perform in an academic setting?

  3. Did any of you take additional courses during your gap year(s) to demonstrate academic promise?

  4. Would a good performance on the MCAT (will take it in August) and a great GPA suffice?

Thank you! I really appreciate your input!!
  1. Depends on the school. I saw “5 years” and “10 years” while I was applying in 2013. I’m attending a school that “recommended” 10 years, but I did have a few of the prereqs slightly outside that window.

  2. No, but only because I had some more recent prereqs done (between 5 years and a few months prior to interview) and had a decent MCAT score. I also had consistency across grades in undergrad, masters (MBA), and post-bacc.

  3. Only because I had some more prereqs to finish up, but nothing beyond what was required for the most stringent school to which I applied. I was '04 undergrad and applied to matriculate to class of '18. My prereqs were done between 2000-2002, 2007-2008, 2012-2013.

  4. Probably. Recency can’t hurt though. Depends on your track record as a whole… If you had good grades throughout or a strong “2nd half” showing, then that would probably suffice (?). You won’t be super-removed from academics.
