Feeling down about F

The semester is almost over and so far I have failed all 3 lecture tests in chemistry. We have one more test and a final left (final counts twice) and I just feel awful. I’m doing great in lab but cannot apply what I’ve learned and practiced to any of the tests we’ve had to get a grade that reflects that. Feeling real stupid and the reality that I am going to get a big fat F on my transcript is making my stomach drop.

I’m trying to figure out why this is happening. I don’t know if it’s because I’m just not getting the material or if I’m just freezing up during the exams. What pains me is that I studied and practiced so hard for this last test. Didn’t amount to a hill of beans.

Did I just make my application for med school harder by failing gen chem? I wanted to be able to apply to both MD and DO schools.

Thanks for listening.

Well, is it possible to drop without receiving a grade? If not, I’d look on the bright side and at least be happy that you’re not earning a C and will be in a position to repeat.

I remember when I received my first F ever, it was embarrassing and nearly devastating to say the least, but then I retook the class and earned an honor grade. I’m not sure if your institution allows you to repeat after failing a course, but I think repeating a course and earning an A or B the second time around is probably even better than earning a good grade the first time; i.e., I think it will signal to the admissions board that you’re intelligent, mature, and resilient enough to go back to the grindstone and bring your dreams into fruition

Talk to your prof about not taking the last 2 exams and getting an “incomplete” grade.

Work it out with the prof, a date to take the last 2 exams.

The incomplete idea isn’t a bad idea, it’s probably too late to change it to an audit.

I had a rough time with gen chem, all the calculations were hard. I finally realized that practicing the same problems over and over again helped me to understand the units and the numbers, then try with a new set of problems and repeat this until you understand it.
