Hi, all! This idea may seem like a no-brainer, but with everything we’re all involved in, sometimes the obvious can slip by! I am always looking for ways to work smart–and I don’t have enough hours in the day to volunteer, MCAT prep, study for my current classes, work my job, and be a wife/mommy… so I am finding ways to combine many of the above. This is just one of them, but I thought I’d throw it out there…
I’m tutoring high school students in honors chemistry! (My mom is a guidance counselor at a magnet school, and she mentioned that several of her students were really struggling with AP Chemistry. Light bulb! I need to review gen chem prior to my April MCAT… what a great way to kill 2 birds with one stone!)
If you are studying for the MCAT and needing some volunteer opportunities, consult your local high school(s)and make your services available once or twice a week!
I feel like these students of “mine” are really making some progress, and at the same time I get to brush up on stoichiometry and acid/base equations! SO great!
Another Example: A friend of mine made an announcement at our church’s weekly youth group gathering (they have over 800 high school students) that he was available for math and calculus tutoring. He sets up in a room at the church for an hour before their meeting on Wednesday nights, and kids come in to get help with homework…
Just something to consider! Most of what I do these days needs to be geared (either directly or indirectly) towards the MCAT and my med school application. This particular activity lets me do something I enjoy (working with students) without feeling like I’m sacrificing time from the med school stuff.
Have a great week, everyone!
now that is genius!
Awesome idea! I am mentally adding this to a future non-trad FAQ.
