Hello folks,
To sum it up, this is a reoccurring question about admissions for non-traditional (somewhat older) students. More specifically this is addressed at the WI tech classes vs UW classes and applying to the WI Medical school in Milwaukee.
I am fully aware that even if MCOW/GB is my primary target, it may not be the one that extends an offer. But not much is lost by trying.
Not sure how much news this has generated but MCOW (Milwaukee med school) just announced the decision to open a second campus in Green Bay for 2015. That happens to be 30 min away from me, so in the perfect world of ‘dream sheets’ as we call them on the military side, this would be a very nice option if possible.
The timeline will match well with getting pre-med classes out of the way. My schooling has been mostly distance based aside from Navy Medicine so I need the classroom and lab credits. (Military respiratory therapist, BS in Healthcare Informatics)
But… therein lies the problem. Around here both UW Oshkosh and Green Bay have told me flat out their sciences courses are daytime only. For those of us who hold regular jobs that certainly puts a roadblock up. (I’m on the fed gov side and I know those hours are very hard to change!) Despite what seems like many people interested in off-hour classes, the UW campuses don’t seem to be interested in changing their current schedule.
I have tried to gently touch on this topic with various admission people but never receive much in response. So the question is aimed more towards anybody who has experience, or through a contact can offer advice regarding Milwaukee’s stance on .
The options for evening classes seem rather open for Fox Valley Tech (5 minutes walk from my house too!). This would obviously work perfectly with my gov job and is the path of least resistance.
The hard path through the Sahara would involve somehow getting my gov job hours changed so I could take classes during the day.
Seems rather obvious which one is preferred, but if the general attitude with MCOW is ‘tech classes kill an admissions package’ then I would definitely want to rethink that route. I really don’t want to get all my courses done and have places turn their nose up despite that being (almost) my only option.
Back in the 90’s my brother did tech college classes in TX vs doing the full UT class and with an awesome MCAT score was accepted to Southwestern. So I suppose according to some, the consideration of tech classes vs 4 year program courses could be a toss up. But I am interested in what folks here have to say.
Please fire away with comments/advice/suggestio ns.
Thanks
Jeremy
