Hello,
I’m just barely beginning my RN to DO/MD transition. Recently made the decision about a month ago. I started out pre med in undergrad but never applied (FUD). I did nursing as a second degree. I’ve been a nurse about 5 years. I also have a MPH. I’m hoping to start a DIY post bacc this fall or next spring. I need to retake organic chem 1 and 2 and physics 2. And I might take genetics and biochem too if time permits. I’ll be contacting adcoms about expiring pre-reqs since it looks like their are lots of answers and opinions on that.
I’ve only told my parents and siblings so far and their response has been, “Finally!?!”. I have a few friend practicing medicine, so I’ll be picking their brains about the process and how to be a more competitive applicant. My gpa is ~3.4 so I know I need to do AMAZING on the MCAT.
For me the transition for RN to do just seems the next logical thing to do. I’ve considered NP programs and NP/PhD programs, but the more I read about the different programs I realize that a medical degree will allow me to do more of what I want to do and take about the same amount of time.
I’m primarily DO-minded and I’m happy to live in a state w/ a public DO school. I hope to keep you all updated periodically and promise not to ask too many questions!
It sounds like you’re ready to roll! Ask all the questions you like! And welcome.
Welcome! I felt that DO was a better philosophical fit for me as a nurse/CNM myself. Glad to have you aboard!
Kate
Another RN to physician-to-be here. I also considered NP/DNP, but honestly don’t think I’d be satisfied. My parents also responded with “We were wondering when you’d finally do this” (instead of the “Are you crazy!” that I expected). I have already shadowed 3 of the docs I work with, and will shadow a few more before the spring is through. Some of the docs are very supportive, some think I’m nuts as they wouldn’t consider going through the particular hell that can be med school/residency again, especially not with a spouse and kids. The nurses I work with are mostly supportive; a few wish they’d done the same when they were younger, a few think I’m crazy, but they’re all rooting for me.
Anyway, welcome! (And asking lots of questions is sort of the point of being here, right?)
Annette
Welcome!
We are all definitely here to help.
