Hi everyone!
I’m a 34 year old nurse (finishing my NP degree at a UC that is linked to an amazing medical school). I’ve always wanted to be a physician, but my undergraduate GPA was pretty crummy. I started a post bacc a few years back but dropped it as I had an opportunity to teach abroad. I applied to NP school because I thought it would be a nice option. However, as I take courses (some with the medical students), the fire to apply to med school and be a doctor has returned!
I’m married, 2 kids, and my husband is super supportive of me going back. I have a 4.0 in my NP coursework, but I know undergrad is where it’s most important. I was going to apply for DO, but now that they don’t do grade replacement kind of messes things up. I know I would be a fantastic doctor and would succeed, but my undergrad GPA is really going to hold me back.
I just wanted to introduce myself. Thanks for listening!
Don’t let it hold you back. Do look at all medical schools and see if they do have a minimum cumulative GPA cutoff. Osteopathic schools seem to be a bit more generous in that arena, but there are exceptions everywhere. I would assume that most committees would be most interested in your most recent academic performance and if you’re slaying your NP courses and doing well elsewhere, that works to your benefit.
