New med student here

I have the privilege of driving from Miami to Fort Lauderdale and back everyday. It is definitely an exercise in patience. One of my favorite occurred this morning when a taxicab driving decided that instead of using his blinker (what’s that?) to indicate changing lanes simply to move his car into my lane (where my car already was)…and stick his hand out of his window indicating for me to stop as if he was a traffic cop directing traffic. Ridiculous! Since when do you throw your car on another car and then have the nerve to act like the car currently in that lane needs to yield to you and whatever rules of the road he makes up at that moment. Grrrrr…

I forgot to actually say WELCOME, hilseb! I’ve seen your posts on other forums, partly because we were almost classmates at NSU…and yes, they are silly. Joking, of course.

Thanks! Are you going to U of Miami?

No, USF in Tampa…This is my second time applying…the first time (last year) I received one interview (from UMiami). My interviewer was totally antagonistic and a real jerk. Despite the “3/4 of those interviewed at Miami ultimately get accepted” stat thrown around on SDN, I was rejected. This time around they didn’t even interview me, but just kept me waiting “waiting a committee decision” status until May. Anyhow, I’m very excited about USF and really liked the school on my interview day, but I was seriously considering NSU because of its location in South Florida.

3/4 of those interviewed get accepted? Where’d they get that from?

Well, consider me in the bottom 1/4, then.

Yeah but you’re the top 1/4 as far as Nova is concerned. It’s all a wash.

There are many reasons I am happy I am going to NSU COM over U Miami. I want to do primary care. I am interested in OMM. I live closer to NSU and would dread that drive to downtown Miami every day, (and then I’d have to pay to park!). I want to do rural medicine, and am interested in the rural rotations at NSU COM more than weird specialist cases at Jackson. Tropical disease specialists and trauma is great for those who want to do it. I don’t.

Hi again Hilseb,

I’m in the bottom 1/4 as well…where do they get those numbers? I’m assuming that is by plugging in the numbers…say let’s x people receive interviews and ultimately y people are accepted. Whether or not this number is correct, it may have changed because in the recent year Miami has been making a big push to get their numbers up and raise in the rankings. In the end, I think Tampa might be the best for my family after all, so like you, I am happy where I will be in the end.

With regard to NSU, I’m really in the opposite situation as you…I don’t see myself wanting to do primary care and even less so rural medicine. Of course, things could change…but I really do see myself doing a specialty in the end. Plus, I didn’t feel comfortable with the unknown and lack of control over where 3rd and 4th year rotations would be. Not to mention that I am in Miami and would commuting to Fort Lauderdale (for another 2 years at least) wasn’t very appealing.

Hearing you and others on SDN talk about the school glowingly made me realize that it really wasn’t for me, since I really did not feel the same sense of belonging.

Are you going to start a diary/blog here or on Mommd? I’m thinking about it…and I think you would have an interesting story to share too.

Sounds like we both chose well. I will get preference for rotating in Broward because I have two children in school here and a husband with a job in Dade.

As for a blog - heh. I keep two blogs already. One at http://www.momstinfoilhat.com and a food one at http://www.foodielovespicky.blogspot.com. Neither is all that autobiographical. I have one long post on the Mom’s Tinfoil Hat one about med school, but it is mostly a specific blog about paranoid parenting.

I'm from USF, and I would love to go their for med school but they seem to be difficult to get into. Do they usually accept more typical med students or more non trads?...just curious what you found out about them and where you found the information, other than the school website. I think that's GREAT that you got in, I would love to know how it's going!
