Organic Chemistry or Physics in the summer?

Dazed,

I will definitely keep you posted. I am doing everything I can at the moment to prepare myself for this task. While I know that it will be very difficult I refuse to remind myself of that. I need to keep a positive attitude.

I wrote a longish post last night and… it disappeared. So here comes the shorter version.

First to SomeWaySomeDay!

It looks like you’ve already made up you mind, but if not I’m going to try to convince you against summer physics and working at the same time! If you want to ‘stay on schedule’ that you made for yourself, and if you don’t want to ‘waste’ a summer, and you ‘have to’ take classes while working… are there any prereqs you have to take other than physics and organics? I would strongly advice against taking physics over th summer and working full time. Even if you understand concepts you’ll still have to spend hours doing lab reports and writeups - they involve just insane amount of calculations and analyses… On top of that you’ll have to do lots of problems to make sure that you can succeed in the lecture part of the class. There’s just not enough hours in the day to do all these things and work full time. If you have any biology classes left, or even general chemistry, it would probably be more doable.

Now, a couple of words to Msautumn (The FluffyOne - I think it’s a female after all)! To answer your question…if you have to take any of these classes over the summer, I’d rather take organics. I’m saying it, b/c I took organics over the summer and it was… doable! I got good grades in both Orgo I and II but… I just haven’t retained much! It’s just super fast and condensed! If you don’t have to work, it’ll definitely do the things doable, but be prepared that you won’t retain as much as taking the class during the regular semester.

The reason I’d take organics rather than physics during the summer is that I found physics to be more ‘worthwhile’ and applicable in a long run. I also, as Mary, took a long time to finally feel comfortable with physics; I’m not sure how it would have worked during the summer. Many people I knew took organics with me during the summer. Some did better than others, but all of us had one complain - we forgot stuff as fast as we learned it. Since MCAT organics is really superficial, I could ‘relearn’ most of the things I needed for the test, but I wish more was still left in my head :).

Anyway, whatever you guys decide, good luck with it!

I’m just going to take Intermediate Algebra this summer. I hate algebra so much that I believe in the summer it is wise for me to only take this one course. Although as I look at the schedule I may try to fit another one in. Depending on my money situation as well. If anything it will be an easy class though, like Healthy Life Skills.

Dr. Renard,

Can you share with me your take on doing a research project this summer for 40hr/week for 9 weeks at no pay).

Or should I take my organic chem I class in the summer?

Does the research experience weigh heavily on med application to the admissions board?

Research looks good.... if it's what you want to do. By that I mean, don't do it just because it looks good on an application. Do it because it gives you a chance to do something interesting, something that obviously excites you when you write or speak about it. DO NOT do research to impress someone else.

Taking O-Chem in the summer is a daunting challenge. There are people on here who have done it. In my opinion, you should only do it if your overall application plan doesn't allow it to fit anywhere else. (for example, you won't be able to take it in the fall because then you wouldn't be able to take another class that you need or greatly want to have)

Good luck!

Mary
