I will enter into a residency program in my later forties. I imagine pediatrics, family and internal medicine and psychiatry will be amenable to the older resident, but how about surgery or emergency medicine? Unfortunately my only interests are the latter two. Have any of you had experience or heard tales of whether older fourth years are not considered for or are at a significant disadvantage for those two specialties??
The one surgical resident I’m familiar with over age 40 had to scramble into a residency. Given the great grades and tests scores this student had, I’m certain their age was the main factor for why this was the case.
If you’re interested in Surgery and EM you should take a look at Anesthesiology and Crit Care.
