Hi, I am wondering if there is a difference if you do your pre med (post bacc) sciences at a university vs a state college?
Our local community college was accredited recently to be a state college so now also offers some bachelor degrees such as Biomedical Science. It would be much cheaper for me to take the sciences there vs the university.
Our local university does have a post bacc pre med program but is expensive and they would require me to take all the pre req’s there in order to get a pre med committee letter. I left a message for the pre med/post bacc advisor but have not heard back yet.
My current undergrad degree is a BSN (gpa 3.43) which was completed 16 yrs ago. I had a 2 mo old, a toddler, and a preschooler and also worked as a nurse’s aid and then later a student nurse tech. while I was in nursing school. I know I could do better gpa-wise now as I would have more time to actually study without my kids being so young lol. I have only had A’s and some B’s in my actual nursing and science classes - no C’s but realize I probably need ALL A’s so would be willing to retake stuff if I had to.
My other concern is that I took some of my undergraduate pre req’s at a CC and then transfered them to a university to finsh my BSN. So not sure if our recently accredited ‘state college (previously a CC)’ would still be viewed like a CC by a big University Medical School, so a little worried about having too many credit hours being from a CC…
I would like to earn an MD or DO instead of a Nurse Practitioner because I would like to do something with pathology and research and I feel like MD’s/DO’s have more opportunties for research and more autonomy. I have always loved learning about diseases, viruses, parasites etc. especially zoonoses and study the cdc and who website info on my own time (ya I’m wierd). I don’t know how feasible that would be at my age (44) but if I don’t try it will probably eat away at me for the rest of my life! I could probably still look through a microscope or even teach when I’m really old though
Hope I posted this in the right place lol. Sorry I’m a newbie
