what it's 'really like' to be a doctor

I am in the stage of exploring the possibility of pursuing an MD. I am currently an engineer but pursued it more or less because I figured it was something I could do. If I had known what I would be doing on a daily basis, I may not have taken this path. In that vein, I don’t want to repeat that mistake because being a doctor seems good from the outside.

My plan is to volunteer at a local hospital for a few months, but I am aware that there’s a real limit on what I’ll learn there. Many doctors don’t practice in that environment, I won’t have access to them, etc.

What else could I do to learn about the life of a doctor? What have you all done? Books to read? Podcasts? Other places to volunteer/things to do in person?

I’d appreciate any tips. Thanks!

Shadow shadow shadow. That’s the only way you’ll be able to use your own perspectives to understand “what it’s like.” Every other source will just be an opinion that may or may not coincide with what you find to be true.

While you’re at the hospital, try to network to find a doctor/doctors that will let you follow them for a few hours so you can get a better understand of what medicine is like and whether it fits your expectations/desires.
