Hello!
I am a fairly new member here at old premeds.
I had a question though…
I had a very rough time in university and I am a current 4th year at UCLA where I was a former science major but now I am a humanities major. I took some pre-med classes but didn’t do stellar in them sadly :(… I finished the math series and and most of chemistry but I feel the need to retake them to boost my GPA.
I feel like I am not eligible for post-bac programs because I did take some pre-med classes so where do I finish them? At a CC? or can I still apply to a post bacc program?
I sometimes feel disheartened about my journey to be an MD.
Any advice would help.
Thanks,
Katrina
First off, don’t let this situation or your GPA discourage you. I’m sure that there are many (including myself) that have had to battle to bring their GPA back up from a less than stellar level. With that being said…
I don’t thing that it would be the best idea to go from an Uni down to a CC. I say this as a CC student, though. Yes your grades might be better but think about it; you’ll have to pitch a very convincing story as to why you chose to finish out your pre-reqs at a CC rather than the Uni where your declared major is. (just my two cents)
Please correct me if I am mistaken but is not Cali ultra competitive when it comes to med schools? I live in Houston and have never visited Cali so I don’t know. Regardless, see what the rest of the group on hear says and weigh the pros and cons to make the best decision.
I believe that any of the post-bacc programs are at a University as opposed to a CC. I am currently a DIY post bacc but maybe there are some on here that are in an actual post-bacc program that can give you some advise as to your GPA situation and applying to a particular post-bacc program. Also, don’t forget that you have to finish up and get some sort of Bachelor’s degree. So by default you’ll end up at a uni anyways. I’d say stay put but that’s just me…unless of course you choose to move out of state. That’s always an option, albeit a very expensive one.
Hope some of my ramblings help out
Good luck in whatever decision you choose. And most importantly make sure it feels right to YOU.
