2015-2016 application cycle

Hi all!

Have been through an extraordinarily busy stretch attributable in part, but not wholly, to the application process. Hence, time on the forums has been sporadic. The good news is I’ve been accepted and I’m going to be a doctor! Due to timing issues with departure from the military, (idiosyncratic to my situation) I’m going to defer for a year. The interesting thing is that I got into the school that I thought was a real long shot. In fact, when the interview and offer came, I didn’t quite know how to factor them into my carefully constructed decision tree. Needless to say, I’m ecstatic; not to mention extremely grateful to be done with the application process. Congrats to OPMs accepted this cycle and best wishes to those gearing up for 2016 cycle.

Congrats dude! After having deferred a year for the same-ish reason, best advice i can give you is to move and get the family settled early, then don’t worry about school until it starts. Enjoy the retirement income!

Hey! I couldn’t tell you the last time I posted - I’m usually a lurker anyway. But nevermind that, I am happy to say that I’ve also been admitted to a MD school class of 2020! Of course I am very excited but as of today, I’m a bit vexed. I just found out that the school (Wayne State SOM) has a - by invitation only - second look day. Aside from the fact that I called the admissions office several times and they NEVER mentioned this important tidbit I’m so confused by this approach in general. Is it uncommon for schools to have a second look or admitted students day? I was under the impression that this was a bit of standard practice. Now all of a sudden its like only some schools do that or only students in MD/PhD programs. Since when? Maybe I am just off base with my expectations but I had a prospective students day and an admitted students day for Grad school and that was a 2yr program.

Help me out here. What’s the deal?

Can’t speak for every school, but it seems like many schools have second look days that are really designed to be recruiting tools and not so much orientation tools. I’ve only seen it where “invitees” to second look are all of the people who have been accepted to that school. It’s a good way of letting committed students see the school again, but really it’s for those students who have been accepted at possibly other places to help make the final decision.

Your school might do things differently…

I’ll be an MD, class of 2020! It feels absolutely surreal.

I guess now you can update your signature. Congrats.

Good luck to all others. Congrats on the interview. If you have interviews, then your chances are very good… Be yourself and you will be fine.
