A Supportive Spouse...

I can’t stress enough how vital it’s been to have a support structure in place through my first semester as a pre-med student. Juggling work, life, parenthood, and school has had its challenges. But my husband has been an absolute rock through it all. When I needed to study, he took care of everything in the house–no questions asked. I’d look up from my Chemistry lab report, and he’d be folding clothes or giving our daughter a bath and getting her ready for bed (all things that used to be my realm)…Never a snide remark, never any resentfulness. Just my biggest cheerleader and helping hand. And because he’s been so positive and excited about “mommy going back to school,” my daughter has taken his lead. She brings me my backpack every morning and wishes me luck before tests and brags to everyone that her mommy goes to “nocturnal school.” She caught his positive vibes, and she’s proud and excited too!

Had we had an opposite experience during this 1st semester adjustment, I don’t think I could’ve continued on this journey. If school had caused anything in my family to fracture, I’d have to hang it up. But that’s simply not the case. In fact, I think we’re stronger than when I started.

Last night, I came home from my last final exam to find a huge flower arrangement on the table (along with a beautiful home-cooked dinner). My husband and little girl signed the card, and it said, “Congratulations, Dr-To-Be Carrie–we are so proud of you!”

I told him last night that I didn’t do this. WE did this. A+ on the school front, A+ on the home front. This is a collaborative effort on the part of my family…and I can’t imagine doing it any other way.

Not much else to say…I know I have a LONG road ahead, but I just wanted to recognize my family and share what a difference they’ve made in my journey!

Carrie

what beautiful post.It seems you have the perfect ingredients for achieving success. Congrats on your performance so far. Things are looking very good for you and I wish the best.

It is one thing to be blessed, but to recognize it is so great.

Enjoy the ride.

Couldn’t agree more with you Carrie. I try to remind my wife everyday how important she is to this journey for me.

That is so awesome! It’s great to have a husband who encourages your goals.

Carrie, That is so beautiful ! And you are, too, for making sure to share the credit around your loving family. I wish for everyone else here to be blessed with similarly incredible strong family support.

By giving, eveyone receives. Isn’t it the truth?
