advice on applying (preferably from people who made it)

I am a recent college grad from a top 20 university. As you can see my gpa is far from stellar and I was wondering if I should even try to apply to medical school. I come from a family of doctors and medicine has been interesting but because of a huge lack of focus, direction, and immaturity, I feel that I have irreperably ruined any shot of me being a doctor. I’m afraid to even attempt to do it because I’m terrified of being 27/28ish and not being accepted and then finding myself in the exact same position I am in with school debt to pay. I havent taken any science pre-reqs but still doing the post baccalaureates is no guarantee. If anyone out there made it to med school with similar credentials please guide me and help me with tips. I would like HONEST feedback. Thank You all.

This is a lot of information to wade through in one sitting. I think many OPMs, like me, have a short attention span and like to see posts that are succinct.


Quick answer:


OPMs from very diverse backgrounds have overcome GPA and MCAT deficiencies and completed medical school. Your stats and background will not likely match entirely with any one individual who has gone before, but the message is the same…persistence.


Finish your prereqs and nail the MCAT. Take one step at a time.
