Is it possible to “apply early” to medical school in the same way that one might to an undergraduate college? And if so, is it recommended?

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘apply early’ but there are a few things that you might be talking about. Application to medical tends to be ‘early’ since you can first submit your application in June the year prior to starting school (about 14 months before school starts)
There are BS/MD programs that allow you to do get your BS and your MD in 7 years.
Then there is the Early Decision Program (EDP) in which you apply to one medical school and you find out if you are accepted on October 15. If you are accepted, you are obligated to attend. If not, you can then apply to other schools. Not all schools participate in this program.
