Good Morning All,
Just wanted to throw a post out there and let my fellow med school hopefuls know that I began working on med school pre-requisites this semester (first day was 08/27/2014). Taking classes at Sam Houston State University in TX (recently awarded Carnegie Research School status). They have a pretty solid college of health sciences, for nurses, pre-medical students, and pre-dental folks. I already have a B.S. (from nigh 10 years ago) so they are treating me basically like a senior, and only focusing on the core curriculum I need for med school. The program I’m doing is sort of like a post bacc, but I’ll actually earn another bachelor’s when I’m done in 2.5 years.
By and large, I would say everyone at SHSU is encouraging. The health sciences advisor only briefly tried to talk me into the nurse practitioner program, mostly because it would be a shorter program, and she felt my chances would be “better”. I thanked her for her recommendation, but told her that I was determined to go to med school. I then offered her the opportunity to tell me I was crazy, but she didn’t, and simply said she thought my determination would get me through.
Anyhow, just thought I’d pass a little encouragement/motivation on to everyone. I’m based in the Houston area, so if anyone wants to connect give me a shout. All the best!

Thank you for sharing. I love how people try to talk you out of this decision to become a doctor as if they are talking you off the ledge of a building! Stay determined!
JZ, Thanks for the note! Had my second advising session again today; and once again, my adviser gave me the old “are you sure” and “what if this doesn’t work out” speech. Anyhow, so far so good; I have 100s in all of my classes thus far (of course, I’m only 6 weeks into this, so we’ll see). Thanks again, stay in touch!

Just wanted to update anyone who might be interested; I’m six weeks into the semester, and I’m holding strong with 100s in all of my classes; quizzes, exams, etc…Had my second advising session today, in preparation for next semester. Adviser gave me the old “are you sure” and “what happens if this doesn’t work out” speech again. Pretty sure they think I’m crazy, but they’re still supporting me.
Haven’t told the family yet (of course my wife knows) but we haven’t told the extended family yet. Waiting until I’m a little further down the road until I say anything more.
I’ve got my schedule for next semester; taking a full load, including biology, along with the state mandatory requirements. For anyone interested in medicine, the pre-med program here seems to be pretty good; I guess I’ll know more once I finish next semester. Anyhow, just wanted to add a quick update for any interested. Hope everyone is well
J.R.
J.R., congrats on your success so far!
