Biochemisty: Survey or Non-Survey

Hello,

I new to the forum, first post, and need some advise about biochemistry. Should I take the survey of biochemistry or the non-survey class? What will be the pros/cons of taking one over the other. My adviser said to take survey to get ready for the MCAT. I am worried that some medical schools will not like the survey class or that I will not be prepared for biochemisty in medical school. I appreciate the advise.

Thanks,

SMD

I wouldn’t worry about being prepared for med school biochem. It’s a whole different thing anyhow. I had zero biochemistry going into med school and I came out just fine in that course.

You’ll need something to help you prep for the MCAT, so the survey course would be useful for that. Not all med schools require biochem as a prereq, so it may depend on where you plan on applying.

I’d take the “real” course just to cover all the bases.

Yes, medical school biochemistry goes at a lightening pace (I took it too), but have some background in it is better than none IMHO. Plus, I’ve heard that the new MCAT has some biochem like questions on it.

Biochemistry in med-school is generally sugar Biochem, so it is almost nothing on genetics(separate course) or molecular DNA Biochem, and cell biology covers that enough. Not even anything to worry about. MCAT is the most important score, and getting mid-30’s is where it is now heading toward. All energy and no holds barred on MCAT. the rest is very learn-able and memorization, so if under 50 years old you still memorize well.
