Chiropractor to MD with low science GPA - Coursework vs. MCAT?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been reading through this forum for a while and finally decided to ask for some advice.

I’m a nontraditional applicant. I earned a bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology, served as an Army National Guard MEDEVAC helicopter pilot, later completed a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree (3.34 graduate GPA), and I’m currently working nearly full-time as a chiropractor.

After practicing as a chiropractor, I realized that the kind of impact I ultimately want to have in patients’ lives requires becoming a physician. I want to be able to evaluate, diagnose, manage, and follow patients through the full spectrum of their care. That realization led me to pursue an MD, and I plan to apply during the 2027 AMCAS cycle for 2028 matriculation.

The biggest challenge in my application is my undergraduate science GPA. My cumulative undergraduate GPA is 3.17, but my science GPA remains below a 3.0. Early in college I faced several personal challenges that affected my academic performance, but my grades improved significantly over time, and I’ve consistently performed much better ever since. Because of that, I’m trying to determine the best strategy to strengthen my application before I apply.

During a conversation with one of the medical schools I’m interested in, I was told that my DC coursework would be viewed favorably as evidence of my ability to succeed in a rigorous graduate-level curriculum. While that was encouraging, I still believe strengthening my undergraduate science record would make me a more competitive applicant and better prepare me for medical school.

The challenge is that I work nearly full-time while preparing for my first MCAT. Every additional science course I take means less time available for MCAT preparation. With limited time outside of work, I want to be intentional about where I invest my effort over the next year.

Because my undergraduate institution uses grade replacement, earning A’s in 9 additional science credits would raise my institutional science GPA to approximately 3.0. I understand that AMCAS includes every course attempt in its GPA calculations, so my AMCAS science GPA will remain below a 3.0. My goal isn’t simply to improve a number, but to demonstrate that my current academic ability is much stronger than my early undergraduate record.

My main questions are:

Given my background, would you prioritize additional upper-level undergraduate science coursework while studying for a first MCAT, or would you focus primarily on earning the strongest MCAT score possible?

With roughly a year before applying, where would you invest your time if you were in my position to build the strongest application possible?

I’d really appreciate any advice from other career changers, nontraditional applicants, or anyone with admissions experience.

Thanks in advance!
