Got my Scores...retake or stick with it?

Here are my scores…what would you do?

Chemistry/Physics - 128 (87%)

Critical Reading 125 (low, but percentile is still 62%)

Biology/Biochem - 128 (87%)

Psychology/Sociology - 128 (86%)

Overall - 509 (82%)

MCAT scores are just 1 part of the application picture, without additional information like GPA, EC’s, it’s hard to say if you should retake or not.

GPA for undergraduate degree and Master’s in Biology is 3.9. (Overall GPA is 3.88 but another Master’s and Specialist in Education are factored into that score as I am moving from a teaching career to medicine).

EC’s?? Sorry new to this forum…not sure what that is?

EC = Extracurricular

You might want to break our your GPAs by graduate and undergraduate, because that is how the application services will break them down.

82% is pretty good. I’m used to the old scale, but you’re about a 32 equivalent which should get you considered at a bunch of places. I’d probably go one cycle and seeing how that goes, unless you’re trying to get into a crazy competitive (read historically high MCAT average) school.

I’d roll with that score. It’s very solid, you didn’t score below 125 on any section. It likely won’t get you into top-ranked schools, but I don’t see a reason to retake, which necessitates another 1-2 months of studying minimum and the realization that most retakers don’t drastically improve (or improve all at all.)

I’d apply to mid-lower tier schools, with one dream/reach school.

First and foremost congratulations, that’s a very good score and one that has you in the game for applying. You probably want to compare the score to the MSAR for your target schools, if it is in range push ahead, if not then think retake. But overall, good job!

82% is roughly is a 31 on the old test

. This was roughly the break even point for matriculants with 58% acceptance rate varying from 48-76 depending on your undergrad GPA https://www.aamc.org/download/321518/data/factstablea24-4.pdf

I do think that the Verbal Score will be a red flag- There is a high correlation between Verbal MCAT and medical School completion. That being said if the rest of your application is good I would shoot for low to mid tier schools . This is the list that came up with the 509 and a 3.8

What is your undergrad GPA? They dont focus too much on grad GPA unless it is atrocious.

I would also apply to D.O schools to be safe.

Keep in mind that state schools have a propensity to take residents of their state. You’ll need to be at least as competitive or stronger to get looked at by “out of state” programs. That being said, many still take out of state applicants, and it may still be worth applying to them. Won’t know who wants you unless you apply, so you should still include schools you want to attend that you don’t think you have a shot at. I would say that at least a few people on this forum recently got into what they considered to be “reach” schools, myself included.

Wow that’s almost exactly my score and individual percentiles! Weird!
