How long is residency after medical school? Does it depend on the specialty?

Hi there,
Not only does the length of residency depend on the specialty but some residencies in the same specialty can vary between institutions. For example, most surgical residency programs are five years but my surgery residency program is seven year mandatory. This does include two research years.
