Introduction

Hello, all! My name is Tamara. I’m 47 yrs. old and have a BA (2001). From there I entered a graduate program two years later for Special Ed. which I didn’t complete. We were a military family that moved around quite a lot and my school ‘created’ online classes so that I didn’t have to leave or transfer to another program. My undergrad GPA is 3.7 and my Graduate is 3.7. I didn’t complete my graduate degree because I realized that although I enjoy several aspects of teaching, my heart was always with the medical field, but I didn’t have support and I didn’t feel ‘smart enough’ for med school.

I have experience in teaching and tutoring all subjects. Also, I have 15 yrs experience in heading up US Army Family Support Groups as co- leader and leader. This past year I decided to become a CNA to get my feet wet and see if this field was still one that I wanted to be a part of (it is!). Med school costs and the grueling schedule is not an issue for me. So, now I’m wondering if I should be a Physician Assistant (faster track for practicing medicine) or do what needs to be done to be a viable candidate for med school (thinking about DO school). In my research, I learned that Mich. State U med school is ‘kinder’ to non-traditional students, which I’m close to.

I’m truly thrilled to have found this site.

hello and welcome. You are among kindred spirits. The only person who can answer the question of which pathway to choose towards medicine is you. And while it is true that it is faster to be a PA, some people may not be satisfied with this. I would suggest that you shadow both a PA and a physician and see which one of these tracks would be a better fit for you.
