Is general surgery a pre req...

I just thought of this…
Is a general surgery residency something that is required before going into a specialty like orthopedic surgery?
If not, is there a general surgery “practice”?
Forgive me if this seems like a dumb question… I don’t know why but I always thought I’d have to do general surgery before orthopedic surgery. :p

Not positive on this - but I believe if you’re interested in Ortho surgery that you can go directly into an Ortho residency. You don’t do a general surgery residency first. Though I’d imagine there are some folks who have done it that way (general to ortho). But this may not be the case for all surgery “subs”.
Hopefully somebody else with more knowledge on this will chime in - Natalie?
Yes, there are general surgeons and docs that practice general surgery.

Hi there,
For most orthopedic surgery programs, you do a designated year of general surgery before you start orthopedic. While you match in an orthopedic program, you still have to do that year of general.
For ENT, orthopedic surgery, urology, plastics and at some places, you do a PGY-1 and PGY-2 year that is general surgery. All surgical PGY-1s pretty much cover patients on the wards and in ICU. There are also rotations through specialties like vascular, plastics and transplant along with the general. :D
