I looked on FREIDA to see what residencies are offered in the Las Vegas valley and I am rather shocked. At our “esteemed” Level 1 TraumaCenter we don’t have an Ortho or Oto residency. Just general and plastic. Neurology or Anesthesiology? Forget it. Primary Care is here, though. I find the sub-specialty offerings to be severely lacking (read nonexistent). What is disheartening is that we have great physicians in quite a few areas here and none can be coaxed into teaching their craft.
As I understand it, residency positions have been capped for quite some time through Medicare in that any hospital that already has a residency of any kind cannot add new positions. Only hospitals that do not have residency programs can start new ones. Doesn’t make any sense, but when did anything Medicare does make sense?
