Physical Therapist to MD... Telling my employer about my plan?

Hello everyone!

I’m a huge fan of Dr. Gray and his podcasts and was listening to an older one from PreMed Years, episode 268, This Nurse Practitioner is on His Way to Medical School. During the podcast, Dr. Gray asked Matt (the NP) if he had told many colleagues about his plan to go to medical school. Matt was honest and said, no he kept it a secret, but eventually they figured it out and were supportive. Dr. Gray made a comment that his advise is to tell everyone about your plan/journey. I have taken the same path as Matt, I am employed full-time as a physical therapist in a home health setting and am afraid to share my plan with my coworkers and supervisor. I guess ultimately what I am scared of is sharing my plan to apply to medical school for 2019 will be viewed by my employer as me not being seriously about my job as a physical therapist. I am currently a supervisor of 4 assistants and am the primary case manager for physical therapists in my office.

My question is: do I tell my director of my plan and hope for support or wait until I am further through the process? The biggest benefit I could see to telling my director is letter of recommendations and possible MD/DO shadowing opportunities because of the relationships they have with physicians in the area.

I appreciate your time!
