BOY!! How happy am I to find this website!
Hello. I’m 25 years old, graduated from a university with a degree on Art History, married to an amazing man an officer in the Air Force, and now living in Germany, our first duty station together. We are postponing having kids for a while, until we are more settled into our married life.
Life should be good for me right?..but something is missing. I have always had an eye on medicine and becoming a doctor. But I never took the idea seriously because to be honest, it intimidated me. Upon graduating college, I worked at an HMO clinic, and I realized that there wasn’t really anything to fear, and that doctors are not born geniuses, and have to work extremely hard to pursue their passion like everyone else.
I started thinking about it more seriously and toying around with the idea of going back to school and pursuing medicine. I talked to my wonderful husband about it, and he is all for whatever career path I choose. But being part of the military, as a spouse, has its own unique challenges.
Is there anyone on the forum that is in similar situation as me? A military spouse, working on pre-requisites to get into med school or in medical school already, and what have been your biggest challenges so far? In college, I didn’t take many science courses, so I definitely will need to work on that. I would really appreciate anyone’s opinions on a post-bac and a do-it yourself kind of route to get these pre-requisites done, is one route better than the other?
I have my eye on veterinary medicine. I am hoping one day, I can get at least admitted into one of the top 5 veterinary schools in the US. I’ve read that it’s tough to get into, and is super competitive as there aren’t many veterinary schools in the US. I can imagine that i have work cut out for me. Any suggestions, advise, and encouraging words, I would greatly appreciate! Thank You.
If you don’t have kids yet and he’s pulling in officer pay and benefits, you could be in good shape to go back to school. I’m not sure what your options are in Germany for taking classes though. Also, depending on how long your husband has been in the military and how long he plans to stay in, there are options where he can transfer his GI Bill benefits to you (or future children) and you can have your classes paid for by the VA. You can check out the VA’s website for details.
If you are interested in becoming a veterinarian, you might have better luck at the SDN forums.

I haven’t seen a lot of veterinarian questions/answers posted at OldPreMeds so you might have difficulty finding answers here.
By the way, your husband chose the best branch of service. Nothing against the other services, but AF takes care of their personnel (and families) better than the others.
