Hello OldPreMeds!
I was just curious as to whether you know or think that medical schools look at your social media accounts. I don’t feel like I have anything to hide, but I do have some rather strong political views, and do share posts or comment on posts with my opinion. Is that something that I should be more cautious about?
They have and do. When I was applying to residency a bunch of my classmates changed their profils to the most private settings, changed their names so they were unsearchable, or deleted them all together. Mine are very borring, mainly pictures of myself on vacation doing things like hiking, so I didn’t bother to disguse my name. I would reccomend scrubing any social media of pictures of you drinking or doing crazy things. You want to present your best self and not give the schools a reason to pass you over.
Adcoms definitely check which is why not one of my social media accounts has my real name listed on it.
Thanks! Very helpful
I too don’t use my real name for most “social” media sites. The only one that has my real name is LinkedIn and even there I obfuscate it by using only initials in place of the full name. I have a limited public footprint which takes my full name and current city of residence to get to. And even those references are because of public engineering reports prepared for govt clients. I was into privacy before privacy became a thing, but they’ll track you one way or another so best to keep things kosher.
