State Preferences

I would do anything to get into to the osteopathic program especially NYCOM. I live in DC area (VA) and I have NO interest in living or practicing medicine in the rural area. VCOM may sound great but I have lived in Blacksburg for a couple of yrs b/c I went to Virginia Tech and I don't like living in a place where there are bunch of cows, horses, lambs running around. It's not that I don't like the nature. I would love rural area for my choice of a vacation place but have NO willingness to live there. However I do not have decent shots for having merely 3.0 or 3.1 GPA (undergrad. including post-bacc) and 3.55 GPA from graduate school. I have approx. 2yrs of patient-direct care exp., 6mos. of research at NIH and one publication. I have not taken MCAT yet.
I know most DO school give preferential admission to state residents (NYCOM admit 85% of in-state applicants ) and I was wondering if I should move to NY to get NY state residence after one year or consider attending NYIT pre-med undergrad program for another post-bacc. I know it costs a lot of money but I am dying to get into my first choice school NYCOM. Besides most school I am considering to apply prefer in-state residence.
I am going to work hard to kick ass on MCAT but I want to make sure I don't get disadvantage b/c I'm out-of state resident. I would not be very happy if I get rejection from the school and someone who's NY resident with similar stat get acceptance.
Am I too picky? I mean am I supposed to appreciate acceptance from any osteopathic school for my achievement?

I'm sure if you read this forum as much as I do, you already know the DO schools calculate GPA differently… Post-Bacc grades can wipe out some of the course grades from undergrad (at least in the calculation). Perhaps your GPA is higher???
I too was thinking about the in/out of state stats. (Where did you find the NYCOM stat BTW?) I am moving back home to NY in part for that reason. I now live in Washington State… fat chance of my getting accepted to the U. Washington and it is the only show in town. I will do a year of post-bacc in NY and then apply to the 15 or so med schools in the state (and many more - I just want to stay in the US for med school). NYCOM is a strong possibility for me but first I'll need to learn what osteopathic manipulations are and if I want to do them… hmmmm.

I found the NYCOM stat from SDN.
Here. They said the stats are about 2 yrs old. So for me chances to get in NYCOM, PCOM, UMD-NJ, LECOM are sllim unless I have a solid background (GPA, MCAT extracurricular activites…etc). Arrrgghhh!

Thank you! I knew those stats had to be somewhere. It just reaffirms my decision to move. My new home is a 10 min drive from NYCOM. Let me know if you move to Long Island.

ahh you're lucky. My younger sister (little baby 23 years old) is going NYU grad school starting this fall and I wanted to live with her if I'm planning on moving to NYC to become a NY resident so that I can save some money but this spoiled little brat do not want to live with me!
