Stay Safe

Any OPMers who are int he path of this historic storm, please, please please. BE safe and be evacuated. Our prayers are with you all.

Amen. My parents have evacuated. One of my dearest friends is dug in with three cats, hurricane shutters, extensive supplies, flood barriers, and the prayers of friends.

Oh man!! From what I have heard, there hasn’t been a storm of this strength to pass through in 36 years. I hope everyone stays safe.

Me, too. She’s actually, in Lacombe, north of the lake, which is much better than being in the city, but still, it’s Bayou Lacombe, not Top of a Really Tall Mountain Lacombe. I won’t relax until I hear from her.

I was scheduled to head over to Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS yesterday from Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX for an internal medicine sub-I. When I woke up and saw that the hurricane was heading straight there, I decided to call my Chief Resident (the only person whose pager info I had there) and tell him that I would be there later in the week. Now that it’s a Cat 5, there may be too much damage for me to go be a burden on their resources, which would not be the end of the world. I would rather not go instead of going and just getting in the way and consuming resources.
A friend of mine is in his last week of rotating there right now. I am keeping him and everyone there in my prayers.

My thoughts and prayes are with everyone impacted by this storm. It scares me that we haven’t even reached the peak of the hurricane season.
I think we’re in for a bumpy ride.

My parents are now moving to my Aunt Marian’s house, but they’ll probably be able to stay with her long term. I’ve been obsessively reading all the news from St. Tammany Parish and my best guess is that my friend Ruth ended up in the upper part of her split-level, but not on the roof.
I’ll take that as a win.
It’s horrible to behold, the five-state disaster area with not enough help and leadership and civilization torn to shreds.

I know, it is the most absolutely horrible thing to happen. It is unbelievable. My thoughts are with everyone affected by it.
