Visiting a Campus Before Applying

Well, I am at a point in my journey where I am 1 year out to taking the MCAT and applying to medical school. After attending the OldPremed Conference in DC a couple of weeks ago, I decided to act on the advice of the 4 admission directors who recommended, during the conference, to call and request an appointment to discuss with a admission director about his/her school and its medical school program.

Today I met Ms. Joy Henderson, Director of Admissions, School of Osteopathic Medicine at Campbell University in North Carolina. Let me just sum up and say WOW. It was an encouraging and positive experience. Ms Henderson did not flinch with my non-traditional background. In fact, she happily shared how her school looks at the whole person concept in deciding who should attend her school. She offered me some questions to ponder on and advice on the application process.

As many of you know, Campbell University DO school just opened last year. Their building is just being occupied. There were techs everywhere installing all kinds of electronics in the class room and laboratories. Ms. Henderson offered to take me on a tour to which I gladly accepted. Their facility is very impressive. It looks like they are installing the latest educational technology. She talked about the top notch professors and curriculum. Everyone she introduced me to were all so nice and friendly. The campus is situated in a very rural area of the state…it is so beautiful and picturesque.

I share this with you to encourage you to go and meet with an admission director who is willing to spend time with you. It provides you an opportunity to see the campus. If you are interested in primary care with interest in serving in a community based clinic focused on providing medical care to the underserved like me, you may want to look into Campbell University.

My friend is accepted there and starting her journey next month. So happy for her! Hopefully I’ll be in that place of my life in 3-4 years.Glad that you liked it over there.
