Week 1

OK, I have spent 22 hours on Physics assignments thus far this weekend. Woke up this morning puzzling over a vector equation assignment and after a LONG time on it, still could not get it entered into WILEY PLUS in a way that pleases the program. 4 hours on writing the lab, but I am pleased with that result. Took a look at my pre-lab assignment for tomorrow and am clueless. FINALLY got an email back from my professor and will meet with him prior to class on Wednesday about obtaining a tutor. HOpefully I will not be

WAYYYYY behind by then. However, with encouragement from all of you, I am feeling pretty darn hopeful and a lot more confident at this point. Special shout out to LifePlusMedicine!! Thank you again!!

Nice work! I am encouraged by your ability to seek out help. I am terrible about it, and suffer as a result. Thanks for posting this! Good luck with the meeting.

My children had a book when they were little called “The Diggingest Dog” At one point the Dog digs a hole so deep it is a well. “Mud and water up to his chin! Goodness what a mess he was in! Duke yelped and yelped, he yelped for help!” I could not be where I am today without ever asking for help when I need it. It is the single strongest and most courageous thing to do. The black community has an old saying, “A closed mouth don’t get fed.” The myth “I can do it alone, I got this…” is a lie. We all need each other…

Vicki–I forgot to also mention the following about physics. As weird as this sounds, there is nothing new under the sun. Physics problems included. If you are working a problem in physics and get stuck? Google it.

Literally. Put the first sentence of the problem into google. 8 times out of 10, a forum or homework site would come up that had help on the solution. Saved my rear on multiple occasions.

The other Godsend? http://www.chegg.com/homework-help/ (it was cramster.com when I used it, but the two sites merged last spring.)

This site had my physics text, and every problem in every chapter had a step by step solution. It was WELL worth the paid membership, and I would say I used this site almost more than my textbook. Definitely worth checking out…do a search for your text and see what you get!

My first class is tonight and I am wondering how accessible help would be with 350 people in the class:)). I already browsed the emails of recommended tutors on our course web site. I emailed a few and they charge 120$ an hour!!! Are these real world prices? I must have been living on the moon:))

Good Luck everybody!!!

Honestly, the chegg site did more for me than any tutor would have, but I may learn differently than you.

I also invested in a TI-86, because it has an equation solver function. I spent a TON of time programming equations into my calculator, and I used the solver to double check my math on the exams for silly mistakes. WORLD of help at the beginning of physics for things like projectile motion, vertical acceleration, etc…

**Caveat: I showed my calculator to my professor and asked him if he minded me using the solver. His response was that if I was smart enough to figure out the technology, I should be able to take advantage of it. Your mileage may vary. Don’t cheat by accident! Find out what’s admissable!

**2nd Caveat: You don’t get your calculator on the MCAT. So don’t depend on it. Learn the equations anyway…just do. The solver was just a double check for me, and saved me some easy points for careless errors. It also gave me more confidence (like a security blanket) for some reason, just knowing they were there to check me in the end.

My $.02-

While the graphing calculators are a nice convenience, many profs forbid their use on exams. We couldn’t use any type of programmable calcs.

Plus, IMO, writing the problems out each time is how you learn, and become efficient at doing the work. You’ll need to be a machine on the MCAT.
