Internship before residency required?

Little confused by some of the info on residencies. Do they all require a 1 year internship before actually starting the residency?

Say a surgical residency is 5 years, do you have to add a 1 year internship to the start of that, making it 6 total?

The answer is “it depends”. For surgery no. For most residencies, the first year of the residency IS your internship year. For a few specialties, you have to do a general internship year and apply as a 2nd year postgraduate. I’m not sure which these are --I think opthalmology, and possibly urology, although there are slots that feed directly into the program.

Pathology has no Internship year.
