Metatarsal Bone Blues

No, I’m not taking anatomy yet … that’ll be next year. Instead, I’m learning about my own anatomy, and its (sometimes frustrating) limits.

Just in time for final exams (which are next week) and winter break, it seems that I may have a stress fracture in the metatarsal bone of my left foot. I saw my PCP Tuesday, and that was his provisional diagnosis (it was also my own self-diagnosis). I see an orthopedic surgeon tomorrow (Friday morning).

The pain is making it rather difficult to study, which is unfortunate and aggravating, given that my hardest final – physics – is first thing Monday morning. (The pain meds are pretty useless.)

Plus, I was planning to spend a good part of winter break shadowing a doc at a local hospital, and that may not happen if I’m supposed to stay off my foot. Also aggravating.

Anyway, just had to vent a bit. Thanks for “listening.”

well, if you get sidelined from shadowing during winter break, perhaps you can use the time for MCAT prep instead…

Hope you are feeling a bit better.

kate

Did you run a marathon without training for it?

Hope you feel better soon. I can’t prescribe oxicodone … it surely kills the worst of pain but will also make you oh so drowsy!

I had a broken toe a couple years ago and the reason it still gives me problems today is because I didn’t listen to my Doc by staying off my foot for 6 weeks! Of course, 4 inch + heels heels don’t help much either, LOL!!!

Thanks, everyone! I appreciate the warm wishes and encouragement.

I did get confirmation Friday from the orthopedic surgeon (and the x-rays done at his office) that it is a metatarsal stress fracture, so I get to wear a walking boot thingy for quite a while. Argh.

On the plus side, it’s my left foot, so at least I can still drive. And it’s not my arm or hand, so I can still take my finals. Trying to think of the positives here!

Now to avoid slipping in all this Chicago snow …

IMHO, see a podiatrist, DPM, a specialist of the foot. I have suffered from various foot aliments from running, hiking, climbing and dropping boxes on my foot while moving. Podiatrists are graduates are 4 year professional schools run under similar standards to medical schools, but specializing the foot prior to graduation. Current podiatry graduates now go for two year residency, soon to be three. It is a career choice often overlooked by oldpremeds.
