anyone know of doctors who started med school at age 49 or thereabouts?

Hello everyone!

I’m applying for medical school at age 49 and live in Britian. I’ve been asked to discuss at interview if anyone in the US has started this late in life and what they specialised in. Please help, I really want to do this but there are so many obstacles in my way as I’m the first in my area to apply at my age and they will most likely say no unless I can put up a bullet-proof case

Reading the following link might be of help:

Thank you so much for this link. All the best to you too

A acquaintance of mine went to a University of California medical school at age 50 and is now a pediatrician.

Started at 42 and now a PGY2 FM Resident…

I am 50 and am a 3rd yr med student

I’m in 2nd year and am 46 (soon to be 47). Had a solid career in business in Canada before pursuing medicine.

If all goes as planned, I will be going into med school in 2016 - at the age of 55.

I will be /cough /cough /hack /sneeze /wheeze…

49 at applications to allopathic only. somewhere, some school will love me and my decent GPA and hopefully, a stellar MCAT!

Congratulations to all of you who are pursuing your dreams and not limited or influenced by other’s opinion of what you can and cannot do driven by pure ageism! I’m a fabulous 50 years old and will be applying to medical school next year!

I’m 56 and a 3rd year med student - going into rural family practice.

You are a true inspiration to me. I am 51, an adult NP about to start pre reqs. My biggest fear— I have to work till 80 to pay back loans, have 2 kids in college. I am so worried, but unable to get med school out of my mind, it is there 24/7. It is such a burning passion.

Same here…24/7!

I understand. I’m actually planning to work till 80 At least my kids were done college. Yes, it’s pretty scary!

You inspire me. Thank you for your post. I am a 43 year old NP seriously considering taking premed courses this fall. The task seems monumental and daunting at times, but I know that it’s doable.

Awww thank you. I’m inspired by so many like yourself. Go for it! You have a lot of support from your fellow nurses and OPMers? Are you going to the conference?

Yes. I’m thinking about going although I just missed the deadline for discounted room rates Also wondering if it would be more beneficial for me to wait for the next conference when I’m actually eligible to apply to med schools. Planning to start taking the requisite courses this fall at a state university.

Any thoughts?

I’m going to the conference this year as I plan to submit my apps next year june1st. So I think it wiki be more beneficial for me to go this year. I plan to take the MCAT in the Spring.

Do you plan to apply early in the application cycle?

i have to take o chem and physics. I’m taking o chem this summer and will continue on in the fall. So I’ll be right there with ya
