Mentor - Mentee OlPreMed

I can help put this together. I have not yet started with my pre-reqs … so I can definitely devote time to this.

Please send me an email or start private topics to let me know what you would like put in. I will also read up on this topic. Any suggestions for reading or URLs to look at are also most welcomed.

Gabe: I can help. Let me know how can I? Before I read your post, I just started thinking and had this ready to post! So just posting it!

Here is the basic design for this:

Project OPM Odysseus (lol - suggestions welcome)

Main Entities:

  1. Program (Mentorship Program Name and details): We can have different programs launched at different times.

  2. Mentors (Name and Details)

  3. Mentees (Name and Details)

    Process:

  4. Site Admin starts a program and opens registration.

  5. Mentors register for the program (only registered site users)

  6. Site Admin approves mentors for the program.

  7. Mentees register for the program (only registered site users)

  8. Mentees can search for mentors under this program, and send a request for coaching.

  9. Mentor can accept, reject, or ask for more information.

  10. Case rejected, mentee needs to look for some other mentor. Go to Step-10

  11. Case accepted, mentee communicates with mentor (and we can (un)hide ways to contact mentor etc.) Mentor or Mentee can request to close this relationship, and then go to Step-10.

  12. Case More Info: Mentee sends additional info, and the process is back at Step-06.

  13. Close this mentor- mentee relationship

  14. Send evaluation form for mentors to mentees; and vice-versa.

  15. Evaluation completed, for this relationship.

  16. Relationship is finally closed.

  17. Site Admin can close the program anytime, or we can also build in few monitoring and support features once the mentor-mentee relationship is accepted and not yet closed.

P.S.01: I can start working on details of this design once I hear from people that this is the direction they want to take. Also, how do I proceed implementing it? Who do I contact?

P.S.02: We can award the best mentor and mentee at the annual OPM conference.

Throw my name into the “desperately looking for someone to tell me it’ll be ok and what I should do next” pile.

Don’t think location is necessary, as we’re on the internet. But I’m in NJ/Eastern PA if that makes a difference.

In 6 short weeks, I will finish residency. I happy to mentor someone in medical school or residency. In august I start as an attending at U of Mass in Worcester.

Hi Everyone,

I am new here. Right now I am trying to get into some postbacc pre-med program to strengthen and refresh what I learned in undergrad. I been out of school for 15 years. I’m really gun shy and have test anxiety. (never had text anxiety when I was younger)

But this something I have been wanting since I was a child. I am kinda fuzzy on how to start my journey

Welcome to the family! Just finished up an enjoyable two years of the pre-req phase. The new (or renewed) knowledge, challenges, and friendships you will experience in the next few years will be VERY rewarding! Enjoy the ride while preparing for the next phase.

Hi, I am new to the site, and I am so thrilled to learn of its existence. If you are still available to give advice, I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to ask you some of my questions. I graduated in 2007 with a degree in International Relations and since then have worked in the non-profit sector and served as a Peace Corps Volunteer. I have always been interested in health and nutrition and have volunteered in the health administration side. I am now finally realizing that becoming a doctor will fulfill my true passion.

Please let me know if you are willing to be a mentor because I have many questions.

Thank you!

Hi everyone, just bumping this thread to see if there has been any action on setting up mentor-mentee relationships.

M

agreed! I’ve done a total 180 and NOW realize that having a mentor and study groups (i.e. working with others and not alone) is the way to go!

now let’s get started lol

I’d love to have the honor of gaining a mentor through this site… Although, I’d be a tough one to mentor… Lots to be done!

I am working on completing an undergrad, and next semester will be my first science heavy semester (Phys 1 Chem 1+lab Cell Bio) and I feel pretty intimidated. I would love some fingers in the right direction

Hi there/

What’s up?

Sorry for interrupting your discussion, but I just saw the word Mentor and got an association with Neil Cafrey.

The forger guy from the “White Collar” TV series, you know.

Btw, when they are going to finish the 3 season?

re: I am working on completing an undergrad, and next semester will be my first science heavy semester (Phys 1 Chem 1+lab Cell Bio) and I feel pretty intimidated. I would love some fingers in the right direction

just one finger, pointing toward the front lines. FOR-WARD!!

Ok, I am new to this site, but I am with everyone else in the sense that I really need a mentor. Since I don’t see anyone making major progress, I am going to take the initiative and to go a head and start something to get this mentor stuff on the road.

I am a rogue web developer/photographer looking to change my career to medicine. If you have any interest in helping me in any way, shape, or form, please message me. I will start researching this week and get post my progress.

We will get this done, I know that there are enough people in the post bacc program that need a mentor just as much as I do, hopefully there are enough people willing to help us out.

We have the technology, we can build it!

If an admin would message me with any details that they would like to see involved with this project, please feel free to message me.

Let’s get this show on the road.

This is going to sound rather, harsh and normally, I’d apologize for that but I don’t think my message can be kind.

I think, personally, anything that remotely allows more personal details to be allowed out into the public venue would be inadvisable.

In this day, where we Tweet our pictures, update our toilet paper selection, and FB/reality tv have been where the broader swath of Americans get their “news” be very, very, very … careful in what, with whom, how, why, etc you post anything.

To me, the disintegration of a society that once knew what boundaries are has been lost, and like water out of dam, you can’t get it back.

Remember, this is not social convening of fun folks for a beer, this is a group of non-trad pre-meds trying to get to a coveted place.

Med school.

No worries about sounding harsh, and in a way I completely agree with you. Personal boundaries are all over the place these days, and who knows, this project may never happen. I don’t want to stir up dust if people aren’t comfortable with this.

I definitely want feedback, and never feel bad about being frank!

With that said, there are ways to making this secure and bare bones. There is definitely no need to have information that is unnecessary in the process of finding a mentor/mentee and I feel like this will be something that we can address if it ever comes up.

Thanks for letting me know adoc2be

Thank you for understanding - I’m not a mean person, just guarded.

The overall idea of a mentor/mentee is awesome!

I’ve been very fortunate to have networked with professors who are sympathetic and willing to help me on my path. They have been willing to advise me on course selection, study skills, habits, fellowships (eeek? really? 3 years residency and then fellowship? what do they think I am, a robot!?!?!?!?!).

My mentors also include the doc I shadow who is beyond supportive from understanding the rigors of private practice in a rural setting, to the mounds of paperwork associated with each patient.

For me, that privacy is of utmost importance. What I share publicly is on my blog but only once or twice has anyone come to realize who Adoc2be is and I trust them too!

Another nice thing to have for this site, that might be simpler to set up for the time being, and one which is long overdue, is a FAQ page to address many of the same questions new posters seem to ask over and over again. Something like this would be very useful and it’s been mentioned from time-to-time, but never seems to happen. Also, the types of privacy issues Adoc2be mentioned wouldn’t be a concern with a FAQ page. The mentor/mentee page, while good in theory, would probably never work in practice. Most OPM’ers who become med students & doctors get busy with their professional lives and ultimately disappear off of the site.

Like Mary Renard, OldManDave... I miss them. Mary especially. She always had a way of putting things directly without being offensive, and behind the PM was one of my, I felt, greatest supporters.

/sigh

I hope I don't follow that trend but I imagine, if I get in, I will follow suit.
